Why I chose to be a Graphic designer.

Why did I choose graphic design as a new career path? Well truth is told I didn’t, not a first  at least.

After  over 12 years of landscaping I decided to change careers as I had lost my passion for the work due to recurring injuries and limited job prospects, at the same time I had rediscovered my passion for art after being gifted a copy of adobe Photoshop and eventually purchasing myself a dslr,  after some time developing my personal work I decided to take the plunge and enrol in a Photography coarse at PCA.

To amass the correct amount of points to gain access to the foundation degree I had to first enrol on the level zero coarse, this turned out to be a wonderful delay.

Due to the high number of enrolments I was grouped within the mass of students hoping to enrol on the graphic design coarse. Due to this placement and the level zeros back to basic formula I started to discover new talents and old forgotten ones.

This refound love for art  made me question my enrolment on the photography coarse as I did not want to constrict myself. This is the beautiful thing about graphic design there are no constrictions to the type of media one can use to create your work, this coupled with PCA brilliant staff that openly encouraged me to discover new genre and incorporate them into my work.

There really was no choice I could ether spend three years studying photography or I could spend them developing multiple practices and skills, another factor was that job market for graphic designers is much more diverse and although hugely populated more dynamic.

I have come to love  graphic design, I love the diversity, the multiple skill sets, the challenges of problem solving, the constant change and flow of trends as well as the continued development of software and diversity of jobs within graphic design.

As I am very new to this field and have very limited experience with the sector I  am not sure on the  direction I wish to take, although I am sure this will change as I develop my skills and become more accustomed to the different job types and working practices within the field.

I have had relatively good luck with external work and have rebranded one Plymouth based company as well as multiple smaller jobs both through design companies and private work and look forward to accomplishing more and more as I develop my skills
